Since 1992, based on an idea by Francesco Illy, the porcelain cup, designed by Matteo Thun and an illycaffè icon, has been the surface on which more than 70 great artists from the international contemporary art scene have expressed themselves, from Michelangelo Pistoletto to Marina Abramovic, from Sandro Chia to Julian Schnabel, from Robert Rauschenberg to Jeff Koons, from Joseph Kosuth to James Rosenquist.

In order to enjoy the illy blend to the fullest, attention must be paid not only to the most suitable equipment for processing it, but also to the final link in the chain: the container that will bring the coffee to your lips. Because the ultimate satisfaction is also determined by the container, the choice of which cannot be left to chance.

This is why the architect and designer Matteo Thun was invited by illy in 1990 to redesign the coffee cup, giving it a unique shape in terms of design, but also a cup capable of enhancing the illy espresso.

Not only the small espresso cups, but also the large cups, mugs and other instruments involved in the experiment were studied in order to enjoy the coffee obtained via the chosen method of preparation (mocha coffee maker, filter coffee, etc.).
